The Power of Story Telling

I just received a phone call from a friend who has a story in my new book "Horses That Save Lives." She called to tell me how overwhelmed she was when she received her book. When she read her story, she burst into tears.

In the course of our talk, she shared with me that she and her husband were getting ready to auction their belongs and sell their house. They didn't have any money and she was worried that they would end up on the streets. The bank was threatening to foreclose, so they hoped to sell before that happened. She also hated to leave the grave of her horse--the one who saved her life.

Then she asked me if I would write her life story. She said that some of it was really terrible. Of course, I knew that she suffered from agoraphobia because of severe child abuse. But I only know a tiny portion of her life. I told her I would be honored to tell her story.

I've received many phone calls like this from my storytellers. They all share a commonality: telling their story has empowered them. It has given them hope that they might help someone else--that perhaps their suffering has been worth it all.

I am so grateful for all who contributed their stories to "Horses That Save Lives." This blog isn't intended to try and sell the book--just to share with you what a wonderful journey it's been working with these people.

And for my friend who may soon be homeless--what can I say? As I pushed the red button on my phone and ended our call, I sat for awhile and thought about her and counted my blessings.

God bless you my friend.
